What caliber handles coyotes without overkill
When you’re calling coyotes, the goal isn’t shock and awe. It’s clean kills, minimal pelt damage, manageable recoil, and predictable behavior at realistic distances. Overkill creates exits you don’t want, louder reports than necessary, and more risk around livestock or property. The calibers below handle coyotes decisively without bringing more gun than the job calls for.
223 Remington

If there’s a standard for “enough but not excessive,” this is it. With the right bullet, the .223 drops coyotes cleanly inside normal calling ranges while keeping recoil low enough to spot hits and make fast follow-ups. It’s accurate, widely available, and easy to tune for pelt-friendly performance.
204 Ruger
The .204 shines when precision matters more than mass. Very low recoil keeps you in the scope, and proper bullets anchor coyotes without blowing them apart. Wind can move it more than heavier rounds, but at typical night or call-in distances, it’s efficient and clean.
22-250 Remington
This one walks the line. It’s faster and flatter than .223, which helps in open country, but bullet choice matters. With lighter, controlled-expansion bullets, it’s decisive without excessive damage. Push heavy or explosive bullets and it quickly becomes more than you need.
17 Remington

For disciplined shooters, the .17 Remington is extremely effective. Shot placement is critical, but when it’s right, coyotes go down fast with minimal hide damage. It’s not forgiving, but it’s far from overkill.
224 Valkyrie
The Valkyrie offers a bit more reach than .223 without stepping into true overkill territory. It performs well in open areas and stays controllable. As with others, bullet selection determines whether it behaves politely or aggressively.
22 Hornet
At closer ranges, the Hornet is underrated. It’s quiet, mild, and surprisingly effective on coyotes inside its limits. It’s not a long-range tool, but when shots are reasonable, it does the job without excess.
5.56 NATO

Functionally similar to .223, but pressure and bullet choice matter more. With appropriate hunting bullets, it performs just as cleanly. Avoid military-style loads if minimizing penetration and pelt damage is the goal.
