Experts Identify Fifteen of the Most Dangerous Trees in the United States
Most people see trees as peaceful and harmless parts of nature. However, some species can seriously injure or even kill humans. From highly toxic sap to massive falling branches, these trees have earned dangerous reputations across the country.
1. Manchineel (The Tree of Death)
Found mainly in the Florida Keys and Caribbean coast, this is considered the most dangerous tree in the Western Hemisphere. Its milky white sap causes severe chemical burns on skin and can blind you if it gets in your eyes. Rainwater dripping from the leaves can also burn. Eating its small apple-like fruit can be fatal.
2. Sandbox Tree (Dynamite Tree)
Native to parts of Florida, this tree produces fruit that explodes with force, shooting seeds up to 150 mph. The sap is also highly irritating and toxic to skin.
3. Poison Sumac
Found in wetlands across the eastern and southern U.S., its oil is far more potent than poison ivy. Contact causes severe, long-lasting blistering rashes.
4. Honey Locust
Armed with long, sharp thorns that can easily puncture boots, tires, and skin. Very common in the Midwest and South.
5. Black Locust
Features sharp thorns along with toxic bark, leaves, and seeds that can cause serious illness if ingested.
6. Eastern Cottonwood & Silver Maple
Both species have extremely brittle wood. Large limbs often break off suddenly (known as “widowmakers”) and have killed many campers and hikers.
7. Eucalyptus
Highly flammable and known for dropping heavy limbs without warning. A major hazard in California and other wildfire-prone areas.
8. Yew
Extremely toxic needles, bark, and seeds. Common in landscaping but deadly if eaten by humans, pets, or livestock.
9. Buckeye / Horse Chestnut
Seeds and leaves contain toxins that can cause severe illness, paralysis, or even death if ingested.
10. Tree of Heaven
Invasive, weak-wooded, and produces chemicals that irritate skin and lungs. It grows rapidly and drops brittle branches.
11. Osage Orange
Produces large, heavy fruit that can injure people or animals when falling. The tree also has sharp thorns.
12. Castor Bean Tree
Produces seeds containing ricin, one of the most lethal natural toxins. Just a few chewed seeds can kill an adult human.
13. Pacific Yew
Found in the Pacific Northwest, its foliage and seeds are highly poisonous and can cause sudden heart failure.
14. American Sycamore
Large, beautiful tree that frequently drops massive limbs without warning, especially after storms. Responsible for multiple fatalities.
15. Red Maple
Extremely common in the East. While not highly toxic to humans, its wilted leaves are deadly to horses and livestock, causing severe anemia and kidney failure.

Trees are an important part of our wilderness, but knowing which ones to respect can prevent serious injury or worse.
