Details emerge of California terror plot targeting Freedom 250 event as alleged mastermind identified
Federal authorities have uncovered more about an alleged domestic terror scheme aimed at the high-profile UFC Freedom 250 event held on the White House South Lawn. The plot, which involved plans for explosive drones and sniper attacks, was disrupted before it could unfold during the gathering that drew thousands, including prominent officials.
Investigators identified Michael Alan Thomas of Pinon Hills, California, as a key figure and alleged ringleader in the conspiracy. Court documents and statements from officials point to his involvement alongside others in coordinating the effort. The scheme reportedly centered on creating chaos at the event to target high-value attendees.
Alleged Plot Involved Coordinated Drone and Sniper Attacks
Authorities say the group planned to deploy drones loaded with explosives near the venue, specifically targeting areas that would force a mass evacuation of the crowd. This initial strike was intended to create panic and direct people toward positions where snipers could then open fire on fleeing attendees, including politicians and other officials.
Additional elements of the plan reportedly included a follow-up push toward White House gates. The operation was described in charging documents as an attempt to spark broader unrest. Recovered items such as rifles, ammunition, tactical gear, and maps supported the allegations during the investigation.
Investigation Launched After Tip from Suspect’s Mother
The FBI became aware of the threat around June 10, just days before the June 14 event. The probe gained momentum after Tycen Proper, 19, of Danville, Ohio, drew attention from his family. His mother contacted authorities over concerns about his recent firearm purchases, online activity, and statements about “hit and run missions” and revolution.
Proper later spoke with investigators and acknowledged intentions to target elites and politicians at the event. This tip triggered a multi-state effort that led to swift arrests and the prevention of any attack. Officials emphasized the role of rapid coordination between federal agencies and local partners.
Multiple Suspects Arrested Across Several States
Five men face charges in connection with the alleged conspiracy. In addition to Thomas and Proper, those taken into custody include Bryan Omar Roa of Calimesa, California; Daniel K. Eskridge of Kidder, Missouri; and Abraham Hermosillo Alvarez of Omaha, Nebraska. Arrests occurred in their respective areas over the weekend.
The suspects are accused of conspiring to carry out the mass casualty plan. Some appeared in court shortly after their arrests, and the investigation remains active as authorities check for any additional individuals involved. Signal chats and other communications reportedly showed discussions of pre-operational steps.
Officials Highlight Success in Thwarting the Threat
FBI Director Kash Patel publicly noted that the plot was “stopped cold” thanks to the agency’s work and partners. He and other leaders stressed that the event proceeded safely due to proactive measures, even as security remained heightened. The operation protected attendees at a celebration tied to national milestones.
Prosecutors continue to build the case, with detention hearings and further proceedings underway. The episode underscores ongoing concerns about domestic extremism and the value of community vigilance in heading off potential violence before it materializes.
